It starts with what you take off first.

When your skin feels dry, tight, or easily upset, even a simple skincare routine can become frustrating. A cleanser leaves you uncomfortable. A moisturizer feels too heavy. You keep trying something new, hoping your skin will finally settle down.

This is where I like to begin with a little botanical education. Understanding what an ingredient brings to a formula helps you choose products with a purpose.

A Plant With Roots in Our Story

My late husband, Dr. Philip Fritchey, introduced me to comfrey, plantain, and Oregon grape root early in our work together. As a master herbalist, his knowledge opened a world of possibilities for my aesthetics practice.

That collaboration helped shape the formula that became Rapid Repair Fluid.

Comfrey belongs to that original story. It reminds me why we started: to bring plant knowledge and an understanding of skin together in thoughtfully formulated products.

It is also a beautiful plant to get to know. Comfrey, known botanically as Symphytum officinale, produces broad leaves and delicate, bell-shaped blossoms. Beneath the surface, its root contains compounds that have made it a valued botanical in traditional topical preparations.

What Makes Comfrey Interesting
for Skincare

Comfrey naturally contains allantoin and mucilage. You may recognize allantoin from skincare ingredient lists. It is used for its skin-conditioning qualities and its ability to help soften and comfort rough, dry skin. Mucilage is the plant's gel-like material, associated with its soothing character.

For our purposes in skincare, think about comfort, softness, and the appearance of healthier-looking skin.

But a plant's composition is only the beginning. The way it is extracted, the amount used, and the ingredients around it all matter. A botanical ingredient does not tell you everything about the finished product.

I have always approached formulation much as I approach good nutrition: one valuable ingredient has its place, but balance makes the whole more useful. Comfrey is part of that balance in four very different Sunshine Botanicals formulas.

Cleanse & Calm:
Start With a Comfortable Cleanse

If your skin feels tight after washing, take a closer look at your cleanser. Cleansing should remove what has accumulated on the surface while leaving your skin comfortable.

Cleanse & Calm is our rich, creamy cleanser for dry, sensitive, or reactive skin. Comfrey joins calendula, German chamomile, and nourishing plant oils in a formula designed to leave skin feeling clean, soft, and calm.

Massage gently for 60 seconds, remove with a soft, warm washcloth, and rinse thoroughly with lukewarm water. Keep your touch light. Sensitive skin does not need vigorous scrubbing.

Rapid Repair Fluid:
Hydration Without Heaviness

Sometimes skin needs moisture, but you simply do not want the feel of a facial oil.

Rapid Repair Fluid is our lightweight, oil-free option. Its aloe vera base is paired with Comfrey, Calendula, Oregon Grape Root, and Birch Bark in a botanical fluid that helps hydrate and comfort skin while softening the look of visible redness.

Consider this formula when your skin feels stressed or easily unsettled and you prefer a light finish. It is a useful option for skin that feels dry yet still tends toward oiliness.

The Elixir: Nourishment for dry, depleted-looking skin

Dryness can show up as dullness, rough texture, and a loss of that supple feeling we associate with well-cared-for skin.

The Elixir Skin Perfecting Fluid combines botanical extracts, including comfrey, with cold-pressed olive, grapeseed, wheat germ, and evening primrose oils. Aloe vera and glycerin contribute hydration, while the oils help soften and replenish dry skin.

This is the formula to consider when you want more nourishment and a smoother, more luminous-looking complexion. Its dual-phase formula must be shaken well before every use to combine the ingredients.

Rapid Repair Balm:
Rich Comfort for Stubborn Dry Areas

Some areas need a richer texture: rough hands, dry cuticles, or patches that remain flaky even when the rest of your skin feels comfortable.

Rapid Repair Balm brings comfrey together with calendula, plantain, olive oil, evening primrose oil, and beeswax. This concentrated balm provides a protective moisture layer that helps soften and comfort very dry skin.

Apply a thin layer to clean, intact skin as directed. A little goes a long way with this richer formula.
