During Cancer Treatments:
Double Cleaning Matters

Share:

When the skin is going through cancer treatments, everything changes.

Chemotherapy and radiation can leave the skin feeling dry, fragile, inflamed, reactive, and far more sensitive than it was before treatment.

Products that once felt comfortable may suddenly sting. Cleansing may become something you approach cautiously. Even water can sometimes feel uncomfortable on compromised skin.

This is when I believe we need to rethink what it means to cleanse.

The goal is not to scrub the skin clean. The goal is to gently remove what doesn't belong there while preserving as much of the skin's protective barrier as possible.

For those navigating cancer treatment or caring for skin after treatment, this distinction matters.

Your Skin Barrier Needs Protection

The skin is our largest protective organ. Its barrier helps regulate hydration and provides a first line of defense against the outside environment.

During and after cancer treatment, that barrier may be significantly more vulnerable.

Skin can become:

  • Dehydrated and tight
  • Dry or flaky
  • Fragile
  • Easily irritated
  • Red or inflamed
  • More reactive to skincare products
  • Sensitive to heat, friction, fragrance, and harsh ingredients

When the barrier is already compromised, aggressive cleansing can create another source of stress.

This is why I don't believe in cleansing until the skin feels stripped or "squeaky clean."

Healthy cleansing should leave the skin feeling clean—but still comfortable.

“During cancer treatment, skincare is not about perfection. It is about protecting the skin, simplifying the routine, and giving the body one less thing to fight.”

Why Double Cleansing Can Be Helpful

Double cleansing isn't about washing your face twice with the same cleanser.

It's about using two different approaches to remove different types of buildup.

The first cleanse is designed to gently lift oil-soluble impurities such as sunscreen, makeup, environmental pollutants, and other residue that accumulates on the surface of the skin.

The second cleanse addresses what remains on the skin without requiring aggressive rubbing or repeated washing.

For someone with compromised or highly sensitive skin, this can be a much gentler approach than repeatedly scrubbing with one cleanser in an attempt to remove everything at once.

When Skin Is Fragile, Cleansing Should Be Gentle — and Intentional.

Step One: Start With Oil

Botanical oils can be particularly useful as the first step because oil naturally attracts and loosens oil-based substances from the skin.

This can help lift sunscreen, makeup, excess sebum, and environmental residue without relying on aggressive cleansing action.

You should never have to scrub fragile skin to make it clean.

Instead, massage gently with the fingertips and allow the cleansing oil to do the work.

For very reactive skin, even the amount of pressure you use matters.

Think soft, slow, and deliberate.

Step Two: Follow With a Gentle Cleanser

Once the first layer of residue has been lifted, the second cleanse can gently refresh the skin.

This is where choosing the right cleanser becomes extremely important.

Harsh surfactants and overly aggressive cleansing can remove more than we intend.

When the skin is already dry or compromised, that additional disruption may leave it feeling tighter, drier, or more reactive.

A gentle cleansing bar can provide a second step without turning the cleansing process into an assault on the skin.

For sensitive skin, I always come back to the same principle:

Less friction. Less stripping. More respect for the skin's natural barrier.

What About Sunscreen and Treatment Residue?

During cancer treatment, skincare can become more complicated.

You may be using sunscreen, moisturizers, prescribed topical products, or other products recommended by your healthcare team.

These products serve important purposes, but they also mean there can be more residue sitting on the skin at the end of the day.

The answer isn't necessarily to cleanse harder.

It's to cleanse more intelligently.

A gentle first cleanse can help loosen surface buildup, while a second, gentle cleanse can refresh the skin without requiring excessive rubbing.

And when your skin is especially fragile, remember that cleansing should support your overall skincare routine—not leave your skin feeling like it needs to recover from the cleansing itself.

Botanical Oils and Compromised Skin

This is one reason I have always appreciated botanical oils in skincare.

Plants contain naturally occurring compounds that can work with the skin rather than forcing it through an aggressive cleansing process.

A well-formulated botanical cleansing oil can help dissolve and lift impurities while providing a more comfortable cleansing experience for dry or sensitive skin.

But I want to make an important distinction: Botanical does not automatically mean gentle.

Not every plant ingredient is appropriate for every person, especially when skin is highly reactive.

During cancer treatment, the skin's response can be unpredictable. Ingredients that were perfectly comfortable before treatment may no longer feel the same.

Always listen to your skin, and when you are undergoing active treatment, discuss your skincare routine with your oncology team—particularly if your skin is broken, blistered, severely inflamed, or experiencing a treatment-related reaction.

A Simple Approach to Cleansing

For someone with delicate, compromised skin, I prefer to keep the process simple.

1. PreCleanse & Detox

Begin with a small amount of PreCleanse & Detox and gently massage it over the skin. The purpose is to loosen sunscreen, makeup, excess oil, and environmental debris without aggressive rubbing. Rinse gently.

2. Redness Relief Bar

Follow with Redness Relief Bar, using a light touch. There is no need to scrub, use a washcloth aggressively, or repeatedly cleanse the same area.  Let the cleanser do the work. Rinse with lukewarm—not hot—water and gently pat the skin dry.

3. Restore Moisture

After cleansing, the next goal is to support the skin's comfort and hydration.  Rapid Repair Fluid can be used as a lightweight moisturizing step, while Rapid Repair Balm provides a richer layer when the skin needs additional comfort and protection. You don't need a complicated routine. In fact, during periods of heightened sensitivity, I often believe the opposite is true.

Simplify. Protect. Listen to your skin.

What I Don't Recommend

When skin is compromised, I would avoid turning cleansing into an exfoliation treatment.

That means being cautious with:

  • Scrubs
  • Aggressive exfoliation
  • Hot water
  • Rough washcloths
  • Excessive rubbing
  • Strongly fragranced products
  • Harsh cleansing agents
  • Repeated cleansing throughout the day

More cleansing does not necessarily mean cleaner skin.

Sometimes it simply means more disruption.

During and After Treatment,  Gentle Is Not Weak

There is a misconception that gentle skincare means ineffective skincare.  I don't believe that.  When skin is compromised, gentleness is part of being effective.  The objective changes.

We aren't trying to force the skin to behave as it did before your treatments. We are respecting where the skin is today and giving it an environment in which it can maintain as much comfort and protection as possible.

  • That may mean changing your cleanser.
  • It may mean cleansing less aggressively.
  • It may mean eliminating unnecessary steps.
  • And it may mean being patient.

Cancer treatment asks an enormous amount of the body. Your skincare routine should not add unnecessary stress.

Your skin doesn't need to be scrubbed into submission. It needs to be treated with respect.
