From Layer Up: Your Fall Skin Regimen
Your Skin Needs Layers, Too!!

Share:

As the seasons change, your skin's needs change, too. Discover how thoughtful layers of hydration, botanical oils, and nourishing creams can help keep your skin feeling soft, comfortable, and resilient throughout the cooler months.

There is something about the arrival of fall that invites us to make small changes. We reach for a sweater in the morning, bring out an extra blanket at night, and begin preparing for cooler, drier days.

Your skin makes seasonal adjustments, too.

After decades of working with skin, I've learned that one of the most important things we can do is pay attention to what our skin is telling us.

A moisturizer that felt wonderful in July may not provide quite enough comfort in October. Skin that normally feels balanced may suddenly become tight after cleansing. Fine lines may appear more noticeable, and areas that rarely need attention can begin to feel dry or rough.

These changes don't necessarily mean something is wrong with your skin. They may simply mean that your skin needs a different balance of hydration and nourishment.

And sometimes, the answer isn't an entirely new skincare regimen.

It's learning how to layer what your skin needs.

“As the seasons change, your skin often needs more than moisture alone. Thoughtful layers of hydration, botanical oils, and nourishing creams can help keep skin soft, comfortable, and resilient.”

Why Your Skin Changes With the Seasons

The Great Fall Hydration Shift

Our skin is constantly interacting with the environment around us.

During warmer months, higher humidity can help reduce the rate at which water evaporates from the skin. But as cooler weather arrives, humidity often drops, and indoor heating introduces another source of dry air.

The result can be an increase in transepidermal water loss, or TEWL.

This is the natural process by which water moves from deeper skin layers and evaporates at the surface. When the skin's protective barrier isn't functioning optimally,

more water may escape, leaving skin feeling dry, tight, or uncomfortable.

Several things can make these seasonal changes more noticeable:

  • Lower humidity: Dry air increases moisture loss.
  • Indoor heating: Heated indoor environments can further reduce relative humidity.
  • Cool winds: Exposure can leave delicate skin feeling uncomfortable.
  • Hot showers: Long, hot showers can remove surface oils and contribute to dryness.
  • Changes in skin barrier function: Environmental conditions, cleansing habits, and individual skin characteristics all influence how effectively skin retains moisture.

I often remind clients that healthy-looking skin isn't simply about adding more products. It's about understanding how the skin functions and choosing ingredients that work with those functions.

That begins with understanding the difference between hydration and moisture.

Hydration Isn't the Same as Moisture

These two words are often used interchangeably in skincare, but they describe different — and complementary — needs.

Hydration is about water.

Water is essential to the skin's flexibility, smooth appearance, and normal biological functions. Water-based formulations often contain humectants, such as glycerin or hyaluronic acid, that help attract and retain water within the outer layers of the skin.

When skin is dehydrated, it may look dull, feel tight, or show temporary fine lines more prominently.

Moisturizing is about keeping skin soft and helping it hold on to that water.

Our skin naturally contains lipids that contribute to its protective barrier. Emollient ingredients, including many botanical oils and butters, help soften and smooth the skin's surface. More occlusive ingredients form a protective layer that helps slow water evaporation.

Think about it this way:

  • Hydration helps replenish water in the outer skin layers.
  • Emollients help soften and condition the skin.
  • Occlusive ingredients help reduce the rate at which moisture escapes.

These functions often overlap in a well-formulated product. The important thing is recognizing that skin needs both adequate water content and a healthy moisture barrier.

This is one reason I've always appreciated carefully selected botanical oils. Many contain fatty acids and other naturally occurring compounds that can complement the skin's own surface lipids.

The goal isn't simply to make your skin feel moisturized for an hour.

It's to support the conditions that allow it to remain comfortable throughout the day.

The Art of Layering Botanical Skincare

Layering doesn't have to mean applying six or seven products every morning.

In fact, when skin becomes stressed or sensitive, I generally prefer to simplify the regimen rather than overwhelm it.

Each product should serve a purpose.

A thoughtfully layered routine can begin with three basic steps:

Step One: Cleanse Gently

Clean skin allows the products that follow to be applied evenly.

Choose a cleanser appropriate for your skin type, and avoid washing so aggressively that your skin feels tight or stripped afterward.

For skin that is feeling particularly sensitive, Cleanse & Calm is one of our botanical cleansing options.

Step Two: Replenish Hydration

After cleansing, this is a good opportunity to introduce a water-based hydrating product.

A botanical facial mist, such as our Cellular Renewal Mist, can be a useful first layer before oils and creams.

Applying moisturizing products while the skin is still slightly damp can also help reduce that uncomfortable, tight feeling following cleansing.

Step Three: Nourish and Moisturize

This is where botanical oils and moisturizing creams can work beautifully together.

One of my favorite combinations for skin that needs additional seasonal nourishment is Lipid Booster Biodynamic Facial Oil followed by Bio-Peptide Firming Cream.

Together, these ingredients provide hydration, softness, and support for a smoother-looking complexion.

How I recommend layering them:

  • Begin with freshly cleansed, slightly damp skin.
  • Apply a few drops of Lipid Booster and gently blend over the face and neck.
  • Follow with Bio-Peptide Firming Cream, using just enough to leave the skin feeling comfortable.

You can also blend a few drops of Lipid Booster directly into your cream when you want a richer moisturizing experience.

Remember, more isn't necessarily better. Your skin should feel comfortable and supple, not heavily coated.

Build Your Fall Regimen Around Your Skin's Needs

No two people have exactly the same skin, and even your own skin may need something different from one day to the next.

Rather than choosing products simply because the season has changed, begin by noticing what your skin needs.

When your face feels dry or depleted

Consider layering Lipid Booster with Bio-Peptide Firming Cream.

The botanical oils provide extra emollient nourishment, while the cream adds water-binding ingredients and moisturizing lipids.

This combination may be particularly useful when skin begins to feel less comfortable as the air becomes drier.

When your skin feels sensitive or unsettled

Sometimes your skin doesn't need more richness. It needs a gentler approach.

For skin that is easily overwhelmed, consider simplifying your cleansing regimen and choosing lighter, comforting formulations.

Rapid Repair Fluid is an oil-free botanical fluid with aloe vera, comfrey, calendula, Oregon grape root, and birch bark.

It offers a lightweight alternative for skin that needs hydration

and comfort without the feel of a facial oil.

If additional nourishment is needed, a few drops of Lipid Booster can be added according to your skin's tolerance.

For reactive skin, I always recommend introducing products gradually and paying close attention to how your skin responds.

Don't Forget Your Body

We give a great deal of attention to the skin on our faces, but the skin on our bodies experiences seasonal changes as well.

Arms, legs, elbows, hands, and the décolleté can become noticeably drier when cooler weather arrives.

This is where I especially love combining our marine botanical body formulas.

Marine Algae™ Brightening Body Cream combines Marine Algae extracts, Sunflower oil, Shea butter, Glycerin, and Niacinamide to help hydrate, condition, and soften the skin.

Bodylixir® is a silky botanical body oil containing Sunflower oil, Laminaria seaweed, Rosehip oil, and bakuchiol.

For everyday body care, apply either formula to clean, slightly damp skin after bathing.

When your skin needs extra nourishment, massage Bodylixir onto damp skin, then follow with Marine Algae Body Cream. You can also blend a little of each in your hands before applying.

Pay particular attention to areas that tend to become rough or dry.

I love the simplicity of this approach. You are not adding unnecessary steps; you are adjusting the balance of moisture and nourishment to meet the needs of your skin.

When Your Skin Needs Something Richer

The Return of Extreme Hydration™ Skin Butter

There are times when even a beautifully balanced daily moisturizer may not feel quite rich enough.

Perhaps you've spent the day outdoors in cool, windy weather. Maybe the air inside your home has become especially dry. Or perhaps your skin naturally needs a more substantial moisturizing formula.

Extreme Hydration™ Skin Butter is designed for skin that needs richer, more intensive nourishment without an unnecessarily complicated routine.

Its formula brings together several ingredients I've selected for their ability to condition and comfort dry skin:

  • Sunflower Seed Oil: An emollient botanical oil rich in fatty acids that helps soften and condition the skin.
  • Shea Butter: A nourishing plant butter that helps smooth dry skin and reduce the feeling of roughness.
  • Virgin Coconut Butter: Provides emollient richness and helps maintain a softer-feeling skin surface.
  • Omega-3 and Omega-7 Fatty Acids: Complement the formula's nourishing lipid content.
  • Vitamin C Ester and Vitamin E: Antioxidant ingredients included as part of this botanical-inspired formulation.
  • Micronized Silver: A specialized ingredient incorporated into the formula.

What I appreciate about this combination is the way the oils, butters, and other ingredients create a rich moisturizing experience while leaving skin feeling soft and comfortable.

Extreme Hydration can be used as a day or night moisturizer, depending on your skin's needs. If your skin becomes particularly dry during the colder months, consider using it in the evening or as a richer alternative to your everyday cream.

You don't necessarily need to layer it over several other moisturizers. Sometimes one carefully formulated product provides exactly the level of richness your skin is asking for.  A Seasonal Favorite Returns Today!

Listen to Your Skin. It Knows When Something Needs to Change.

One of the most valuable things I've learned in my years as an aesthetician and formulator is that skincare should never become a rigid set of rules.   Your skin is a living, responsive organ.  It responds to changes in climate, age, hormones, daily habits, and the environment around you.

Some mornings, a lightweight hydrating fluid may be all you need. Other days, a few drops of botanical oil under your moisturizer may make all the difference.

And when winter's colder, drier conditions arrive, you may find yourself reaching for a richer cream or skin butter more often.

Pay attention to the way your skin feels after cleansing. Notice whether it stays comfortable throughout the day. Observe changes in texture, softness, and the appearance of fine lines.

Those small observations can tell you a great deal about what your skin needs.  You don't have to replace your entire skincare collection every time the seasons change.  You simply need to understand how to adjust it.
